Birth Story: Ezra Thomas Cole

This beautiful baby boy was born on April 22, 2016 at 6:04am. He weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces and 20 inches long. And he officially has one of the craziest birth stories out there!

In the weeks leading up to his birth I was just not feeling right. I was so swollen, tired and just not feeling well. So after lots of talking with the midwives, one of them finally understood that these weren't just normal complaints. I developed preeclampsia again, as I did with Jack, and had to be closely monitored. I spent a few nights in the hospital without the doctors deciding to induce me. On April 21st I went in for my usual Non-Stress-Test and was supposed to meet with the high risk doctors to discuss when I would be induced. That morning I really felt awful and was throwing up, so Mom decided she would come with me and Hope said she would watch Jack, which all turned out to be completely necessary. After checking my blood pressure, I was immediately sent upstairs to triage to be induced. My cervix was actually soft and I was slightly dilated.

Ben rushed to the hospital and was by my side to care for me and the baby. Dad, Hope and Ron also came to the hospital, while Jody and Lizzy watched Jack. I am so thankful that I had such a strong supportive family with me!

Induction started and I was very awake and active for it. I was put on magnesium which immediately felt like I was put inside an oven. But other than that while we waited for the pitocin to kick in and start labor, I was feeling pretty good. I was able to joke around and talk with everyone. The turning point was when the midwives tried to insert a foley balloon. Hope stayed in the room because we thought it would be no big deal, but the midwives had trouble with it. I ended up in so much pain that I started throwing up. Hope may be scarred for life and not want to ever have a baby, haha! I did get an epidural. I always wanted a natural birth but the magnesium kept me confined to the bed and it was just impossible for me to cope with the pain on my own without being able to move.

After all night with pitocen I finally became dilated and ready to give birth. Everyone was sleeping in the lobby, except for Ben who was in my room. He was so great, getting me drinks, keeping me calm and I know he was so tired. He slept for a bit but I had to wake him up because I knew it was time. He got my mom and the midwives and we started. After a few pushes we were getting there, and that's when the real craziness started.

I remember looking at Ben and locking eyes and just smiling at each other. Then everyone turned to look at the monitor for the contraction and I heard everyone start shouting. Ben passed out. He just fell right down, hitting his head off of the linoleum floor. A midwife turned to me and said, "Don't be scared but there are going to be a lot of people in here". I had to stop pushing and the room was rushed with nurses and doctors asking me if Ben was prone to seizures. I was so overwhelmed and scared. He finally woke up after a few minutes and was so upset. He didn't want to leave the room, but he had to be taken to the emergency room. He wouldn't get up so a nurse had to get his dad to help him and convince him to go. It was so sweet that he didn't want to leave me. He left and I yelled to him that everything would be alright.

Two pushes later and I pushed out our baby. Ben just missed it by two pushes. The contractions were so painful, but that last push was incredible. I felt so proud of my body for doing this and it was an experience I'll never forget. I didn't even tear, so no stitches for later (HALLELUJAH!). The pediatric doctors were brought in because I had gestational diabetes so they had to check the baby immediately. As the midwives pulled the baby out and set him on my stomach to cut the cord, one of the pediatric nurses walked by and said "What a beautiful baby boy" and my mom, the midwives and I all said in unison, "No, it's a girl!" as the midwife was cutting the cord. I think that shocked her and she jerked her hand, causing the cord to spray cord blood all over my nurse, who was holding the baby. She was covered in blood and said "Just keep going" while they finished up with the baby. She had to go to the emergency room because blood got in her eye! So that's two people from my birth room to go to the emergency room! Then I had a moment to fully realize I had a BOY! I was in total shock, but complete joy that this little baby was mine! They checked him out and then brought him to me. I got to hold him on my chest and then breast feed him right away. Even though Ezra is not who I was expecting, I fell instantly in love and connected to this surprise boy!

We got to spend several hours together as everyone settled down. But Ben was still in the emergency room and was having a hard time. He lost his memory of most of the previous day. He was so confused that we had a boy and kept asking if this was his first. In fact, Ron didn't even believe it when he heard it was a boy. He thought my dad was joking and had to remind him that Ben was really confused and not to joke around! My dad had to tell them repeatedly that it really was a boy! By about 3pm we were able to go down to the emergency room so that Ben could meet his new son. Because I was on magnesium I couldn't get out of bed, so I was wheeled down, with Ezra being wheeled down in a bassinet! Finally Ben got to hold his boy and we confirmed that he was our Ezra Thomas. I didn't want to say the name until I knew that we both were sure it was perfect!

After our visit, Ben was released to a room so we were all wheeled in our beds to our respective rooms! It was so funny, a train of Coles! Later that night, Jack came to visit and got to meet his new brother. It was one of the sweetest moments. He was so excited and thrilled to see the baby. He was afraid to get on my hospital bed, but kept going to see the baby. Over the next few days, it was clear that Jack was meant to be a brother. It was so natural to him and he had such an instant connection to Ezra. I'm so thankful for my boys and their obvious love for each other!

We ended up being the talk of the hospital with that wild birth! As crazy as it was, we were all safe and mostly healthy ( a concussion for Ben). My heart was so full and I couldn't stop smiling the whole hospital stay. I honestly felt guilty about smiling because of poor Ben's condition, but adding Ezra to our family was just too exciting to not smile!

My Growing Bump

I wasn't one to take those perfectly staged photos with the month number on my belly, but I did try to take more bump photos during this pregnancy. I seemed to have a theme with my pregnancy style: stripes and denim! I really loved my body during pregnancy, despite some of the harder moments with swelling and some pain. I was so proud of my body for growing this baby! I loved as I got bigger because I knew that meant my baby was gaining weight! I'm so thankful that I was able to carry my babies and I will never forget what it was like to have them in my belly!

Co-Ed Baby Shower

Just days before Jack was born, my mother-in-law hosted a second baby shower for me and the Ginger. The soccer theme was adorable with such a cute cupcake “cake” (from Giant Eagle!). I guess I’d better prepare to be a soccer mom, because that is certainly the Ginger’s plan! Jack is going to be all set in his first Riverhounds onesie, little trainers and already too many jerseys to count!

Last Bump Photo

These are the last pictures of me before I gave birth to Jack! My sister and I were randomly out in South Side and decided to do a little photo shoot. Boy am I glad we did. I love these photos and I’m so glad to have some nice shots of me this big! I didn’t really document my belly enough during this pregnancy so I’m thrilled to have these at least. Next pregnancy I’d like to do a weekly photo to see the changes. Wow, did I say next pregnancy…that won’t be happening anytime soon. I want to enjoy just Jack for a while. But one day…

HIGH FIVE FOR FRIDAY

This is week 33 of my pregnancy. It’s getting a bit harder as the weeks go by, but I know that in just a few more it will be worth it because I’ll have my little boy! My goals for these weeks are to take care of myself, relax, and enjoy the people in my life!
1. The Ginger and I have only one more birth class left! I really enjoyed the classes because we did learn a lot of techniques to use. My goal is to give birth naturally…or as naturally as possible. I will be induced because of some high blood pressure that I’ve been having with the pregnancy. But I really hope to use the techniques to get through the birth without an epidural or other drugs.
2. I had a really trying day at the hospital this week because of the blood pressure, but then I spent the rest of afternoon with my sister. We had such a fun time, eating, talking and taking pictures. It totally changed my mood for the day and I’m so thankful!
3. As difficult as it is to have complications with my pregnancy, twice a week I get to hear my baby’s heart beat for about 20 minutes and it’s wonderful! It’s a necessary test to be sure everything is going as it’s supposed to and it really makes me feel better to know that he is doing well!
4. The Carnegie museums were free on Thursday! The Ginger, Hope and I wandered through it for a bit, mostly talking. We’re not great at museums…we get bored…but we had fun none-the-less!
5. Those feet! I can’t get enough of this pup! She’s just too cute!

Library Baby Shower

image
During this time while pregnant, I’ve realized just how many people really, truly love me! I was given the most amazing shower by my mom, sister, and cousins. They put so much time, energy and love into it and I can’t thank them enough. For about a month we crafted every Monday night to prepare! Those nights were just as much fun as the shower, spent laughing and laughing!
The theme for the shower was Build-a-Library. We asked everyone to bring a book instead of a card and baby Jack is so set to be an avid reader! With the book theme in place, we decided to use Little Golden Books as inspiration for the decorations. Like with the Gender Reveal Party, Pinterest was an amazing source of inspiration. The color scheme was green and yellow to match the nursery. Everything came together so beautifully! Probably my favorite part of the decorations were the reading quotes on brown kraft paper. It was so simple, but really beautiful paired with the pennant banners made from old Golden Books.

Most importantly, I loved spending time with so many lovely women who attended my shower. I really have some of the best friends and family! We played shower games (because I LOVE them), ate delicious homemade food, and got to look at all the presents that guests so generously gave to make Baby Jack’s entrance into this world easier!

Maternity Session

Back in May, the Ginger and I won a raffle basket that included a free portrait session with a local photographer! We decided to use them for our Maternity shoot! We had a blast at our shoot in Dormont Park with Melissa Distel. She was so generous to included a $75 portrait session, along with $75 worth of products. Since we were so quick and easy with the shoot, she said we could use the rest of our package for a newborn shoot with Baby Jack! I can’t believe we have that all set! Newborn photos…it’s unreal! I love free, or mostly free stuff (the raffle ticket was cheap compared to what we won)! And I’m in love with the photos. I know we will cherish these and will be so happy to look back at these in twenty years!

It's a Boy!

image
And we cut the cake to find blue icing!!
We had our ultrasound painstakingly early in the morning…8am. I say it was painful because our party wasn’t until 7pm that night! We had to wait all day to find out…I don’t know how anyone could wait the entire nine months.
The ultrasound tech wrote down the gender in a card and I brought it to the bakery. I was a bit nervous leaving that envelope. Especially because I used some stationary I had laying around, and it had a pink envelope (no expectations, just what I had already). The guy at the counter was like, “Oh we’re making a cake with pink icing, right?” I sort of freaked out and shouted, “NO! Look inside the envelope!” I was a bit on edge, I guess because he just started laughing at me!
But the bakery did a fabulous job and it matched the card…which I asked to have back just in case! Ha! So paranoid.
It was the most amazing feeling cutting into that cake with the Ginger. I had guessed boy beforehand but I really wasn’t sure. I always imagined having a girl, but I could not be more thrilled to raise a little boy. Everything will be so new and exciting with a boy. I have nothing to compare it to, like I would with a girl! I know the Ginger is going to be an amazing father and it’s going to be a blast being a parent with him!
And now we can start shopping! Oh wait. I’m on a spend freeze. Well, we’ll see how that goes. I guess moderation is key, because I know I can’t hold off on buying baby clothes for too long!

Gender Reveal Party Part 1

image
The Ginger and I decided we would have the most fun finding out the gender of our baby while surrounded by friends and family! As true products of our age we hosted a Gender Reveal Party! Pinterest was my great friend during the planning process!  You can check out my inspiration board
It was a very light, fun party so we decided to have just a dessert bar! But of course we went all out! We had French macarons, chocolate covered pretzels, my Mom’s famous chocolate chip cookies and Hope’s oatmeal peanut butter cookies (my favorite kind), brownie bites, M&M’s…and then the cake! More on the cake in a later post!
No party in 2013 is complete without a photo booth, so we had two options for our guests. Everyone who thought it was a boy got a mustache, while those guessing girl got lips. It’s great to have a log of who guessed correctly before we cut the cake…and I love photo booths because you are sure to get at least one photo of everyone at the party! Stay tuned for the gender reveal!

My First Bump Shot

image
Alright, so there’s not really a baby bump yet…just my gut…but I need a before pic and this is it! I am so looking forward to actually looking pregnant. I can’t believe that in a few short weeks I’ll be able to feel the baby! Seeing the ultrasound and then hearing the heartbeat made this all feel so much more real, but that bump will really mean I’m pregnant. That might sound a bit dumb, but I guess seeing is believing?
Now let’s hope my attempt a being trendy with oversized shirts pays off. I’m hoping to not have to buy too many maternity clothes. We’ll see how that works out!

Starting Out

image
So far in the past five days I have avoided Target, The Loft (despite sooo many sales!), and the grocery store. But there have been a few set backs already.
I ate out twice while freelancing. I had two 16-hour days going straight from job to job. On Friday and Saturday I ate out at one job, but packed lunch for the second job. Luckily, my pay for the freelance jobs include a small lunch stipend. I think the cheap meals of fried rice and Subway were OK because of the stipend. That’s how I’m going to look at it at least. However, I will try to be more prepared by packing better lunches in the future.
My big unexpected purchase was $15 for Sea Bands to help with nausea. I’ve been feeling slightly miserable lately. I know that’s probably partly attributed to the double shifts I have been working. Unfortunately, it’s a great month for freelance media and I want to earn as much as I can now while I still have the time to work crazy hours. I should have done more research on the Sea Bands though, because since buying them I read that some believe they produce only a placebo effect. I guess imagining they are working is better than nothing. With playoff hockey and arena football, ain’t nobody got time fo morning sickness!

Working away now to save for later!
