THIS MOMENT

On this beautiful 70 degree Spring day, we took our first family walk together. We pushed Jack up our long street to the main drag, where we got ice cream. It’s amazing to think about all the times we’ll take this walk in the future! I imagine Jack getting so excited talking about which flavor he’ll get at the ice cream shop!

AN AWFUL DECISION

Last week we had to surrender our family cat to the Humane Society, where she was put down. It is one of the saddest things we’ve ever had to do, and I’m having a hard time dealing with it.
Our sweet Rambo was four years old and at most times a good cat. Before she was spayed we had an incident where she latched onto my leg with her claws, unprovoked, and a stressful few days followed of trying to calm her down. After she was spayed she went back to her normal self. Until two weeks ago. While in the nursery, with Jack in the crib, I was vacuuming. Jack began crying and I turned off the vacuum. That’s when Rambo attacked me. She lunged at me, latching onto my arm with her teeth. She hung there while I was in shock. Finally, she hissed and howled as she fell off scratching and biting her way down my arm to my leg and even my bare feet. The Ginger came rushing into the room and was able to get her into the hallway and we barricaded ourselves in the nursery.
I stood there shaking, bleeding and crying. All I could think of was what if I had Jack in his bouncy seat on the floor where she could have landed on him or latched onto him. What if I had shaken her off of me so instead of jumping to the floor she jumped into the crib. I am so thankful that Jack wasn’t hurt. I feel that Rambo might have been protecting him since he was crying, or she just was overwhelmed by the noise (however, this wasn’t the first time I’ve vacuumed, causing Jack to cry). I didn’t know the why, but I knew that she couldn’t live with us anymore.
We reached out to every animal shelter in the area, contacted friends and friends of friends, but we could not find a home for her. In good conscious I don’t know how we could have given her to someone knowing that she could possibly attack them. After housing her at a kennel for the week we decided the best option was to take her to the Humane Society, which the other shelters we called suggested. There they decided that she was too much of a risk to have adopted and the best thing was to humanely put her down. I feel awful about this choice. But I’m not sure what else we could have done.
I worked in a boarding kennel for nearly 10 years and have been an animal lover all my life, and with this decision I feel like I betrayed all animals. I am so torn because I know that we could not care for her anymore and I did not want to put Jack in any danger, but I also know that she was a sweet, loving cat most of the time and she deserved to have a long and happy life.
I don’t know what I could have done differently. We made all kinds of efforts to get her used to Jack before we brought him home from the hospital. She seemed fine up to this point and that’s what makes me think we made the wrong decision…something set her off and maybe she’d never do this again, but that MAYBE was too risky for me.
I know that for four years I had a beautiful, sweet cat and she will always be in my heart. She was the first baby for me and the Ginger. We raised her and loved her. I’m not sure what we did wrong, but I do know that we gave her as much love as we possibly could.
On a side note, 85% of cat bites/scratches get infected. I was put on two antibiotics and have not had any problems other than soreness.
It will be many, many years before we adopt another pet. I don’t think I could handle something like this again. I just can’t believe she’s gone.

THIS WEEKEND I:

Watched: Game of Thrones…and loved/hated the moment we’ve all been waiting for!
Listened: to Jack’s sound machine play Rock-a-Bye-Baby through the monitor
Learned: that I have a lot more to learn when it comes to breaking news in Master Control at work
Ate: McDonalds, ugh. Operation Sunday-healthy-food-meal-prep was in full effect afterwards
Drank: Diet Coke, again ugh. Water bottles are being washed and prepared to be used!!
Thought: that my hair could go without being washed every day – was wrong.
Wished: I could stop time to sleep
Realized: that I’m in no way ready to run in the Pittsburgh Marathon Relay
Bought: 10 pounds of carrots from Costco to juice and eat

He’s not loving it yet, but he is sitting in his Bumbo seat! Look at those neck muscles holding up that big noggin!

WHY I WORK

Since going back to work I have been really upset about leaving Jack. We’ve got a small army taking care of him…the Ginger (who is not babysitting his own child because it’s ridiculous when people say that about a dad), the Ginger’s parents, and my parents, especially my mom. My mom has been amazing coming over to my house every Monday and Tuesday (and other random days when I take a freelance job) after working an overnight shift to watch Jack so that I can sleep.
I appreciate this so much, and honestly feel so guilty.
I want to be the one there with him and just have our family watch Jack when the Ginger and I want to go on a date. But financially, and mentally, that’s not possible. I need to work.
This month has been the toughest so far. I have a lot of freelancing gigs that I confirmed before I realized that I probably wasn’t ready to work this much. The thing about freelancing is that the more work you turn down, the less work you get. And I really don’t want to flake out on any jobs because chances are I won’t get the opportunity to do them when I feel better. So I’ve been working like a crazy person…16+ hour days, sometimes 7 days a week. I’ve been trying to stay awake when I’m at home to spend some time with Jack, but that means I’m getting like 4 hours of sleep a day, if that. It’s rough, to say the least.

But this post isn’t about complaining. I got an email tonight that confirmed why I’m doing it. I started training at the beginning of the month on a new position for a freelance job and tonight was my first time solo.
To put it modestly, I killed it. Ha! It was a great night, and I really like the position. There was one tiny mistake that probably no one watching the show noticed and other than that it was spot on. I got an email from the producer complimenting me on a great job, and continued on to say that I’m a great asset to the production. It made me feel good.
And it made me realize that I’m working these long days and taking every job I get offered because I am moving my career forward. I want to provide for Jack. A constantly advancing career will provide stability for our family and is leading us to a debt-free life.
It gets so hard sometimes. When I got to my full-time job tonight after working the freelance job all evening and stopping home to see Jack for an hour, I just cried. I got so overwhelmed, but then I checked my email and saw those great words of encouragement.
It’s worth it.
I’m providing financially for Jack. I’m teaching him work ethic, as well as being a strong female role model. Plus, he gets to spend time with other people who love him too. Right now things might be hard, but as my postpartum emotions level out, and once I understand this new mom/work schedule, it will get easier.

That said, I am happily off for the next two days and I plan on doing nothing but cuddle Jack and the Ginger. And even with all the work, I still get smiles like this from Jack! image

GIRLS NIGHT: PAINTING

I’m slowly figuring out our new “normal”, fitting our old life into this new life with a baby. It’s certainly taking time to make it all work and I suspect it will keep changing, but no matter what I know that I need to be sure I’m giving myself some time to just be with friends. As much as I want to spend every minute with Jack, I need to have some baby-free time, outside of work.
Last week my friends invited me out to a Corks and Canvas event at Kiln N Time in Lawrenceville. I’ve heard all about these painting nights on Instagram and Facebook, and I was eager to go to one myself!
I was a bit intimidated about painting, but it turned out to be so easy and fun! Our instructor explained the painting step by step and we just followed along, attempting our own works of art. I know it’s a bit cheesy having a Pittsburgh version of Van Gogh but I really love it and the Ginger said he’d hang it in his office at work!
It was so relaxing to have a glass of Sweet Red wine, hang out with friends and pretend that I can paint. I can’t wait to go back again. Next time I’m taking my mom and sister! It also inspired me to start a Pinterest craft night. Hopefully once a month my friends and I will work on a craft that we’ve pinned.
